Murat Çetin, President of the Board of Directors of the Olive Friends Association, issued a celebratory message on the occasion of World Olive Day, declared by the International Olive Council for the period between 15–30 November. In his statement, Çetin also shared his assessments regarding the new olive and olive oil season, noting that olive oil production is almost certainly expected to exceed 250,000 tons and that the increase in demand during this period is encouraging for producers.
In his message celebrating 15–30 November World Olive Day, declared by the International Olive Council, Murat Çetin, President of the Olive Friends Association, also offered evaluations regarding the new season. Criticizing the fact that, unlike in previous years, the official olive and olive oil crop estimate report had not yet been announced, Çetin nevertheless stated that both sector expectations and current data make it almost certain that the sector will reach an olive oil output of 250,000 tons.
‘RISING FARMER COSTS WILL BE MET BY DEMAND’
Emphasizing that the rising production costs faced by farmers cannot be ignored, the President of the Olive Friends Association noted that sales prices have increased to some extent in parallel with growing demand for olive oil. Murat Çetin also added that they are expecting a bright export season for olive oil, supported by secondary factors such as exchange rates. He underlined that, as an association, they also expect concrete steps to be taken in the areas of promotional efforts and the fight against adulteration.
In his statement, Çetin shared the following expectations for the new season:
“Although the season has already begun, the official crop estimate for olives and olive oil has not yet been announced. Nevertheless, data from the Turkish Statistical Institute and sector expectations indicate that reaching figures of around 250,000 tons in olive oil production would not be surprising.
As is always the case at the beginning of the season, while the yield per tree may suggest that 7–8 kilograms of olives produce 1 kilogram of olive oil, this ratio has recently begun to return to its usual level, partly due to rainfall.
Although our farmers’ production costs—especially fuel costs—have risen, the increase in demand for olive oil has also positively affected sales prices. It is encouraging for producers that olive oil is finding demand at these price levels during a period of increased crop yield.
At the same time, we particularly wish to emphasize the importance of increasing tree planting, the necessity of expanding the level of state support provided to producers—as seen in Europe—the need for provincial directorates of agriculture to intensify inspections in the fight against adulteration, and the necessity of imposing heavier penalties. Furthermore, we would like to underline that it has now become essential for both the Ministry and the Government to intervene in this matter, and we hereby call upon our Minister of Food, Agriculture and Livestock to take action. As one of the most important NGOs in the olive and olive oil sector, we are ready to offer our support.”
THE DIRECTION OF EXPORTS SHOULD TURN TOWARD BRANDED PRODUCTS
Noting that they expect the current upward momentum in olive oil exports to continue this season, Murat Çetin concluded his remarks—while also celebrating World Olive Day—with the following words:
“As is well known, the increase in olive oil exports continues. The rise in foreign exchange rates and the increase in crop yield appear likely to create favorable conditions for exporters to market Turkish olive oil more effectively. What matters is to seize this momentum as an opportunity and move forward in branded and packaged exports with the right strategies…
With regard to the domestic market, promotional efforts must continue on a sustained basis. The path to increasing per capita consumption, currently at 2 kg, lies through effective promotion. Public service campaigns are highly important in this respect; however, other vegetable oil and margarine lobbies are also working to prevent olive oil from becoming even more prominent. As an association, we take part in every event related to olives. In this regard, we strive to contribute to the increase of domestic consumption by supporting all activities, from tasting education programs to harvest events. We have also begun preparations for Olivetech 2018. This year, we are joining forces with the fair organizing committee. I congratulate the entire olive-growing sector on World Olive Day and wish everyone a fruitful season.”
