“DO NOT PUT YOUR HEALTH AT RISK BY BUYING OIL FROM UNINSPECTED SOURCES”
The Olive Friends Association has warned vacationers against olive oils sold along roadsides under unhygienic conditions. Murat Çetin, President of the Association’s Board of Directors, emphasized that olive oil is a highly delicate food product, stating, “Oils purchased from roadside vendors pose serious health risks.”
Murat Çetin, President of the Board of Directors of the Olive Friends Association, stated that citizens travelling during the summer holidays with the intention of purchasing natural olive oil may in fact face serious health risks by buying oils that have oxidized and lost their extra virgin olive oil characteristics. He stressed that, just like meat and dairy products, olive oil should not be purchased from unsuitable points of sale.
“OLIVE OIL IS FRUIT JUICE”
Underlining that olive oil is a fruit juice and a sensitive food product, Çetin warned holidaymakers against unhealthy olive oils with the following remarks: “Especially in summer holiday destinations, unbranded olive oils sold along roadsides in plastic soft-drink bottles not only fail to meet the qualities expected of a fine, authentic, and high-quality olive oil, but also carry serious health risks. Olive oils purchased from such roadside vendors oxidize within just a few hours under the sun and lose their extra virgin olive oil characteristics. In most cases, while trying to buy something more natural, more genuine, and of better quality directly from the producer in its own region, we end up purchasing olive oil that has completely deteriorated, oxidized, and lost its extra virgin quality.”
Murat Çetin also added that olive oils sold at such points, under heat and in unhealthy packaging, also carry the risk of adulteration (blended oil).
WHAT SHOULD BE CONSIDERED WHEN BUYING OLIVE OIL?
Stating once again that olive oil is a fruit juice, Çetin listed the key factors consumers should pay attention to when purchasing olive oil as follows: “Olive oil should be protected from daylight and heat, and the ambient temperature should be around 15°C. There should be no humidity or unpleasant odors. Olive oil should be packaged in dark-colored glass bottles. The packaging must include essential food-related information such as the brand, business registration number, production date, and expiry date.”
